Westover talk with Dr. Lua Hancock about what organizations can do to increase the number of women in leadership roles.Dr. Lua Hancock specializes in providing consulting in areas of leadership, youth empowerment and engagement, change management, conflict resolution, emergency planning and response, assessment, and diversity, equity and inclusion. She has worked with various Fortune 500 companies and higher education institutions from diverse sectors to facilitate towards values and goal creation, alignment, and success. Additionally, she works as a coach to industry leaders assisting them with mindful, equitable and impactful leadership.Dr. Hancock has more than 20 years of progressive student and academic affairs. Most recently she served as the Vice President of Campus Life and Student Success at Stetson University. She was charged with leading areas including the Academic Success, the Center for Community Engagement, Career Development, Campus Safety, Residential Living and Learning, the Dean of Students, Student Health, Student Counseling, One Stop, Wellness and Recreation, Diversity and Inclusion and Student Development and Campus Vibrancy. Dr. Hancock co-chaired the Strategic Enrollment Team and co-chaired the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion leadership team. She also was a key leader in pandemic response and change management planning.Lua was previously the Director of Residential Life and Housing and the inaugural Director of Student Success at Nova Southeastern University (NSU). She has also led major construction and renovation projects including residence halls and student union buildings. She has a BS from Rollins College in Psychology and African/African American Studies, a MS from NSU in Alternative Dispute Resolution and an EdD from NSU in Higher Education Leadership.Lua’s area of publication include mindful leadership, women’s leadership and collaboration between academic and student affairs. Westover talk with Karen Larsen Brown about coming back into the workplace full-time and quantifying skills.Karen Larsen Brown is the Senior Director of Outreach for Saprea. She is passionate about ending the epidemic of child sexual abuse and its lasting impacts. She oversees a team that focuses on bringing healing and prevention tools to individuals, families, organizations, and communities all over the world. She helped to oversee and develop the Saprea Support Group resource, the Community Education program and oversees the language translation efforts to help bring resources to more audiences. Her team also drives events and volunteer engagement. In her past experience, Karen has worked to help bring training in trauma-sensitive interventions to social workers and caregivers who work with children. She also spent 10 years helping those struggling with substance use disorder find recovery resources. Karen holds a master’s degree in Organizational Management and has a strong track record for building successful teams. She currently resides in Utah with her husband, their 3 teenage kids and their adorable labradoodle Nova. North is a native of Orem, Utah, and obtained a B.S. in Business Management from UVU in 2007. She then graduated from the S.J. Quinney College of Law at the University of Utah in 2010 with her Juris Doctorate. She began her legal career with a large insurance defense firm in Las Vegas, Nevada. After returning to Utah, Kara began practicing law in Utah County, with a practice primarily focused on plaintiff’s personal injury litigation, criminal defense, and adoption. She has successfully argued for her clients in Juvenile, District, Mental Health Court, and the Utah Court of Appeals. In 2022, Kara partnered with Jill Coil at Moxie Law Group, a boutique personal injury firm in Utah County. Kara currently serves as the UVU Alumni Board President and is a member of the UVU Board of Trustees and UVU Foundation Board. She is the 2023 Women’s Caucus Chair for the Utah Association for Justice, 4th District Chair for Women Lawyers of Utah, and previously served as the President of the Central Utah Bar Association. Westover talk with Sharla Butler about learning how to be a better leader as a new executive.Sharla Butler (www.linkedin.com/in/sharla-butler)has enjoyed an impressive 29 year career in the direct-selling industry working with multiple Utah based companies. She currently oversees cross-functional efforts to commercialize products in all 30+ markets as the Director of International Commercialization at doTERRA International LLC. She chairs an internal committee to review and approve product requests, and she and her team then work with all departments to plan, prioritize and project manage thousands of product launches each year. Sharla has also taken on an active role in improving existing processes, and in implementing new ones. She has a full knowledge of the product lifecycle and is passionate about business operations and loves to problem solve, identify improvement opportunities, and help make other employees’ jobs easier. She recently joined the LBTGQ – Employee Resource Group at doTERRA and is passionate about allyship and support to those that she works with. Sharla has a degree in Business Management from Utah Valley University that she earned while raising her family and working full time. She is married, has two children and two grandchildren. Kamilyn Ball grew up in the small town of Afton, Wyoming. She attended Utah State University where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting. She then attended the University of Washington in Seattle to earn her Master of Professional Accounting, specializing in taxation. After graduation, she began her professional career with EY's tax practice in Seattle. She has spent the last 22 years working in various roles in the field of accounting. Twelve of those years were spent with EY in their global compliance and reporting tax group starting as a Staff and leaving as a Senior Manager; 2 years as a Tax Director at DaVita Healthcare, a public Fortune 500 company, 5 years at UVU as an Accountant, Adjunct instructor, Professional in Residence, and Dean's Executive in Resident in the Accounting Department teaching intro accounting classes, undergraduate and graduate tax classes, and overseeing the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. After teaching at UVU, she went to work as a partner at an outsourced accounting start up and then moved on to her current role as a Controller at Advice Media, LLC, a digital marketing company located in Lehi.
